Meet Kobe Koala

CLAUDIA WEAVER

Before Cozy Hollow wakes, Kobe is already working.

He moves through the village in the blue hour before dawn, his lantern held steady, his tin of oil in the other paw. He fills the lanterns that burned low in the night. He straightens the ones that tilted in the frost. He checks the hooks, the wicks, the tiny knots of twine that hold everything in place.

He does this before anyone is awake to see him do it.

He likes making things feel safe.

Kobe Koala is the one everyone leans on. The steady one. The one who shows up quietly and stays late and never makes a fuss about either. He is genuinely glad to be useful. He is genuinely glad when the people he loves are warm and held and alright.

He is also, very quietly, running on empty.

Not in a dramatic way. Not in a way anyone would notice. He has gotten very good at needing things in corners where nobody can see. At filling everyone else’s lantern and not mentioning that his own has quietly run out.

Kobe is a soft grey koala with warm amber eyes. He carries a small pack with everything anyone might need. He is always the last to leave and the first to arrive, and the one who remembers what you take in your tea.

He would do anything for the people he loves.

His story is called Kobe Koala and the Quiet Lantern.

It is about what happens when someone finally fills his.
